Priyanka Gandhi takes charge as AICC general secretary in-charge of UP (East)

New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) In a clear signal that the Congress party is at the forefront in Uttar Pradesh , party’s newly appointed general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh (East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday took charge at AICC headquarters after dropping her businessman husband Robert Vadra at Enforcement Directorate office, where he was summoned to join investigation in a money laundering case.

Priyanka, who is considered to be Congress’s best political challenge to the rival parties was appointed as general secretary in-charge  of UP (East), which has 43 constituencies, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Varanasi and Gorakhpur-the political bastion of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath , on January 23, in a surprise move.

Ms Vadra took charge of the post two weeks after she was appointed by her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi for a crucial battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

According to party’s communication department, Ms Vadra started her work, soon after taking over office, and also interacted with Congress workers.

The newly appointed general secretary was allotted the room, next to Mr Gandhi’s, which he occupied as party’s vice president before moving to the office, where his mother used to sit as party president.

Earlier in the day, Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was also appointed the same day as general secretary of Uttar Pradesh (West) took charge at AICC headquarters.

The Guna MP took charge “with the resolve of strengthening the party in the state”.
