Russia President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Victory Day celebrations scheduled for May 2020, here.
“And of course, we are waiting for your visit, dear prime minister. We will meet in Brazil at the BRICS summit, and we also expect to see you next May at celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the victory in World War II, victory over Nazism,” Putin told Modi on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), reported Russian news agency Sputnik.
Victory Day is a holiday that commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. It was first inaugurated in the 15 republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of the German Instrument of Surrender late in the evening on May 8, 1945 (after midnight, thus on May 9 Moscow Time).
The Soviet government announced the victory early on May 9 after the signing ceremony in Berlin. Though the official inauguration occurred in 1945 the holiday became a non-labour day only in 1965 and only in certain Soviet republics. (UNI)
