Teachers in Assam have come out in protest against the state’s Education minister over his purported remarks equating the profession of teaching with that of a driver and stating that teachers have to ‘renew their license’ to continue in their jobs.
Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) qualified teachers across the state today staged protests against the minister, Siddhartha Bhattacharyya, demanding withdrawing of his remarks drawing parallels between a teacher and a driver.
They have also demanded for continuation of jobs for those TET-qualified teachers already in service, refusing to sit for a new eligibility test.
Bhattacharyya, in a recent interview to a public radio service, had pointed that the
validity of the TET certificate of the first batch that had cleared the exam in 2012 will
expire in 2019 at the end of the seven year validity period.
