Train service was on Wednesday suspended for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where Eid-ul-Fitr, culminating the holy fasting month of Ramadhan, is being celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety.
No train will run on June 5 and 6 in the valley after a fresh advisory was received from police on Tuesday night, a senior railway official told UNI.
Therefore, he said, no train will run on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir on Wednesday and Thursday. Similarly, trains will not chug on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region, he added.
However, people who had arrived at different railway stations today in the valley and Banihal alleged that there was no prior information about the suspension of the train service, which has become very popular, since it is very cheap, safe and fast against all other mode of transport available in the valley.
It will be field day for cabs and other transporters, who are charging several time more than train fare, besides, it is time consuming.
Railway officials said that they are acting on the advice of local administration, particular police, who are taking decision keeping in view the safety and security of the passengers besides railway property and officials.
He said a letter was received that there is apprehension, threat of damage to railway property and other assets in view of past incidents during Eid-ul-Fitr 2018.
