Tripura mime artist Swapan Nandi conferred academy award

Leading mime artist of Tripura Swapan Nandi has been conferred
the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy award for the year 2018.
He is the lone mime artist in the list of 44 awardees in different categories.
Nandi will be honoured with cash prize of rupees one lakh and a copper plate with
his name inscribed on it in a special programme in later part in the year by President
of India. He is the lone Academy award recipient from Tripura this year.

A versatile artist in painting, recitation, acting on stage and musical accompaniment,
Swapan Nandi had studied in Calcutta Art College till 1971 and returned to Agartala
next year. He had joined the information and cultural affairs department in 1972 and
retired as joint secretary in the year 2008.

Nandi had learnt the basic of mime acting from a Russian actor Igor who had come
to Calcutta and then started acting on stages in different places. He felt that his award
will inspire others to take to the cultural form of mime acting.
