Two militants, reportedly belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit were killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a cordon and search operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Wednesday, official sources said.
According to the sources, the firing has stopped and search operation was going on and people were requested not to venture near the encounter site.
Meanwhile, internet mobile service has been suspended in the district as a precautionary measure to prevent spread of rumours.
They said, on a tip off about the presence of militants in village Maminder, Shopian, troops of Rashitriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF) launched a joint search operation in the wee hours.
After all exit points were sealed, security forces came under heavy fire from militants, they said adding additional security forces were rushed to further tighten the cordon to prevent any attempt by militants to escape.
However, when the security forces tried to move towards the particular area, militants again opened fire, and it was retaliated, they added.
