In a landmark decision, Uttar Pradesh Lalit Kala Akademi has decided to recognise folk art at par with fine art by announcing scholarship scheme for folk artists.

Under the Art Teaching Scholarship Scheme of the Akademi, the State’s apex body for fine art, will offer a monthly scholarship of Rs.5000 to artists and sculptors associated with folk art.

The scheme would be launched in January 2021.

So far, only painters and sculptors of visual art were eligible to avail scholarships.

However, the Akademi submitted a proposal to the State Government for inclusion of folk art under the scholarship scheme following which the rule was amended.

Earlier, five visual artists from the state used to get scholarships related to modern painting and sculpture.

Upon the amendment, six folk artists will be offered scholarships for one year.

The Akademi has further decided to offer a financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 to the artists under the age of 40 and engaged in research on folk art.
