Undeterred by the fact that Congress had won just 52 seats in the Lok Sabha, party President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said they would work together like ‘a pride of brave-hearted lions to protect the Constitution and institutions’ and that the BJP will have no walkover in Parliament.
In a post on social media, Mr Gandhi said, ‘the Congress Party may have just 52 Lok Sabha members, but we will work together like a pride of brave-hearted lions to protect our Constitution & Institutions & to fearlessly do our duty as the leading Opposition party. The BJP will have no walkover in Parliament.’’
This is the first statement by the Congress President since the results of the general elections in which the BJP retained power with a landslide win, securing 303 seats in the Lok Sabha while the Congress put up a poor performance with just 52 seats in the Lower House.
In the wake of the poor show by the Congress party, Mr Gandhi had offered to resign as Congress President at a meeting of the Congress Working Committee but the CWC rejected his resignation and authorised him to restructure the party.
