However, recent telecom subscription data released by TRAI reveals a significant shift in this trend, with the widespread adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), now transforming high-speed broadband internet access in rural areas.
As of March 2025, JioAirFiber, the flagship 5G FWA service from Jio, accounts for over 25 lakh rural 5G FWA subscribes across the country. Notably, around 44% of Jio’s total 5G FWA service JioAirFiber subscribers belong to rural regions. In fact, Jio stands out as the only telecom operator offering 5G FWA) service in both urban centers and in rural landscapes, unlike competitors which primarily focus on urban markets only. Jio dominates the 5G FWA segment in the country commanding over 82 percent subscriber market share and over 55.7 lakh JioAirFiber subscribers, outpacing its nearest competitor by a wide margin.
In Odisha, Jio’s robust and the largest Jio True5G standalone network across the state, especially in the vast rural expanse, has placed it as a commanding position in the 5G FWA segment. By March 31, 2025, JioAirFiber had crossed 1.5 lakhs subscribers in the state, which is over five times more than the nearest competitor, as per the data released by TRAI.
The immense popularity and rapid adoption of JioAirFiber, especially in the rural parts of Odisha, highlights the rising demand for reliable high-speed broadband internet access, especially in rural regions, which were previously underserved due to challenges with last-mile connectivity.
