Samsung Chip Design Studio launched at the IIIT-Bangalore campus

Samsung Chip Design Studio

Samsung Chip Design Studio: IIIT-Bangalore is setting up the Samsung Chip Design Studio Center, equipped with EDA Tools for making chip design accessible to interested engineers and early professionals. IIIT-Bangalore acknowledges Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR) for supporting the entire design studio setup under its CSR initiative. The Chip Design Studio is a step to enable motivated students with interest and revolutionary ideas. It nurtures knowledge of various tools like circuit design, EDA, simulation, and characterization.

The VLSI industry in India and worldwide is undergoing radical changes due to the evolution of technology advancements at various levels including semiconductor technology, design changes, verification, and tool flow. This requires not only skilled manpower but also a facility to try out different designs and explore various opportunities in this space. Although many academic institutes and training centres make the VLSI tools available, the cost to educate is high and it does not allow individuals or teams to explore.

The Samsung Chip Design Studio at IIIT-Bangalore aims to fill the gap by enabling teams to implement, simulate, and characterize innovative designs. Eligible students can now submit their proposals on “Chip Design Ideas” and participate in the evaluation process. On average, 10 teams with 3 members each will be allowed to access the tools. The teams will be given tutorial sessions on the usage of the tools.

The Design studio aims to foster and cultivate individual ideas to prototype, and thereby expand the innovative space in the VLSI segment. The expert members will select the ten best proposals, and these teams will receive tutorials on the usage of the tools. Once completed, they must demonstrate the design completion within five weeks. The Design studio aims to foster and cultivate individual ideas to prototype, and thereby expand the innovative space in the VLSI segment.  The top 3 winners will be recognized in the final round and all participants to receive certificates.
