Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set To Launch by Month-End

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: First Vande Bharat train with sleeper coaches is poised for its debut by the end of this month, representing a major milestone in the nation’s quest for faster and more comfortable rail travel.

Speed Limitations Amid Modifications

While the new sleeper train promises enhanced passenger comfort, sources from the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) reveal it may not reach the originally anticipated top speed of 130-180 km/h. Modifications to include sleeper berths, absent in the earlier chair car versions, and additional water storage capacity have increased the train’s weight.

Officials from the Perambur Integral Coach Factory (ICF) explained that the added weight restricts the train’s maximum achievable speed to 130 km/h, falling short of its initial design goal.

Before entering regular service, the sleeper train must undergo extensive testing and certification. The RDSO is currently conducting simulations, including loading coaches with sandbags to replicate passenger weight.

Following these tests, the Railway Safety Commissioner will oversee trial runs at the maximum speed. Final approval will be granted only after the train successfully meets all safety and performance criteria.

Manufacturing and Production by BEML

The sleeper coaches are being manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), which delivered the first set of coaches to ICF on October 4, 2024. Since then, ICF has been preparing for the official launch.

In 2023, ICF signed a contract with BEML for the production of 10 Vande Bharat trains, each comprising 16 coaches. This partnership underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure.

A New Era for Indian Railways

Despite the speed limitation, the introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train is expected to revolutionize overnight rail travel in India.

The train offers passengers a blend of speed and comfort, setting the stage for future advancements in the Vande Bharat series. Efforts to enhance performance and meet speed targets remain ongoing, promising an exciting future for Indian Railways.
