Vedanta Faces Tribal Threat: The Dongaria Kondh community in Niyamgiri has reignited their agitation against Vedanta’s proposed mining activities, alleging a conspiracy to permit mining in their sacred hills. The tribal community has categorically resolved not to allow mining under any circumstances. The Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti has warned of large-scale protests if any attempt is made to resume mining.
Recently, a meeting was held in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi District, Odisha by a pro-mining group, advocating that mining would bring development, employment for local youth, and reduce the migration of Dongaria Kondhs to other states for work. Following this, the local administration submitted a memorandum to the President, Governor, and Chief Minister supporting the mining proposal. However, the Dongaria Kondh community, comprising residents of 108 villages in the region, rejected the pro-mining group’s decision, calling it one-sided.

At a press conference in Lakhpadar village, Niyamgiri Suraksha Samiti chairman Lada Sikaka stated that the community has been protesting against mining in Niyamgiri since 2004, emphasizing their spiritual and cultural attachment to the hills. He highlighted the 2013 Supreme Court intervention, which led to village council meetings rejecting mining, ultimately resulting in the cancellation of Vedanta’s mining license.

The Dongaria Kondhs now suspect renewed efforts by the BJP-led governments at the Center and State to reopen the mining proposal. They pointed out that certain organizations in Lanjigarh are rallying in favor of mining. The tribal leaders have warned that any decision against their interests would result in mass protests, with hundreds of Dongarias taking to the streets with traditional weapons to defend their rights.
The Dongaria Kondhs reiterated their determination to protect Niyamgiri, which they consider a sacred land vital to their cultural identity and survival.
