PM Modi in Sri Lanka: In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was today conferred with the prestigious ‘Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana’ award by Sri Lankan President Disanayaka. The award, considered one of Sri Lanka’s highest honours, is a recognition not only of PM Modi’s contribution but also a tribute to the 140 crore people of India, underlining the deep-rooted friendship between India and Sri Lanka.

Addressing the gathering after receiving the honour, PM Modi said, “This award is not just a personal honour for me, but also for every Indian. It is a symbol of our shared history, culture, and deep friendship.”

India Stood by Sri Lanka in Every Crisis: PM Modi

Recalling his fourth visit to Sri Lanka as Prime Minister, PM Modi reflected on his previous visit in 2019 during challenging times for the island nation. He lauded the resilience of the Sri Lankan people and expressed happiness over the country’s return to the path of progress.

“Be it the 2019 terrorist attacks, the COVID-19 pandemic, or the recent economic crisis — India has always stood firmly beside Sri Lanka,” PM Modi stated.

Quoting Tamil saint Thiruvalluvar, he highlighted the value of true friendship during adversities.

Strengthening Energy, Economic, and Defence Ties

PM Modi elaborated on recent bilateral initiatives, including:

  • The Sampur Solar Power Plant for Sri Lanka’s energy security.
  • Development of Trincomalee as an energy hub.
  • A multi-product pipeline agreement.
  • Electricity grid inter-connectivity between both nations.

Additionally, India will help implement a 5,000 Solar Rooftop Project for religious places in Sri Lanka and provide assistance for Sri Lanka’s Unique Digital Identity project.

Humanitarian Assistance and Development Initiatives

Reaffirming India’s commitment to Sri Lanka’s development, PM Modi announced:

  • Conversion of loans worth over USD 100 million into grants.
  • Reduction of interest rates on existing loans.
  • A support package worth 2.4 billion Lankan Rupees for the Eastern Provinces.
  • Inauguration of Sri Lanka\’s largest warehouse for farmers\’ welfare.
  • Inauguration of the ‘Maho-Omanthai’ railway line.
  • Modernisation of Kankesanthurai Port.
  • Completion of 10,000 houses for the Indian-origin Tamil community.
  • Skill development for 700 Sri Lankan professionals across various sectors.

Security Cooperation & Defence Agreements

PM Modi stressed the shared security interests of both nations and welcomed the defence cooperation agreements signed during this visit. He also highlighted collaboration in the Colombo Security Conclave and Indian Ocean security.

Promoting Cultural & Spiritual Bonds

Further strengthening cultural ties, India will send the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha, discovered in Gujarat in 1960, for exposition in Sri Lanka. PM Modi also announced India’s assistance in renovating the Thirukoneswaram Temple, the sacred city project in Anuradhapura, and the Sita Eliya temple in Nuwara Eliya.

On Fishermen and Reconciliation Efforts

Discussing the fishermen issue, both leaders agreed on adopting a humane approach and ensuring the immediate release of detained fishermen and their boats.

PM Modi also expressed hope that Sri Lanka would meet the aspirations of the Tamil community, fully implement its Constitution, and conduct Provincial Council Elections.
