Terminal Cancer Patients: When a cancer patient reaches the final stage with no hope of recovery, the pain becomes indescribable. The family, too, is overwhelmed with despair. After doctors declare that recovery is impossible, families are left grappling with how to care for their loved ones at home.
Amid such a situation, Bhubaneswar witnessed the launch of a new and innovative healthcare centre named ‘Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre’. Subroto Bagchi, entrepreneur and co-founder of Mindtree, and his wife, Susmita Bagchi, have been funding this Centre.
This centre would offer end-of-life care to people with complete love and affection. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and Health Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling have been present on this occasion.
This facility, set up near Infocity 2 in Bhubaneswar in collaboration with the Bangalore Hospice Trust‘s Karunashraya initiative, offers completely free care for terminal cancer patients. The main goal of the center is to help the patients ease out the unbearable pain and sufferings at the last stage.
The Odisha government has also supported the center by providing land and other necessary resources at subsidized rates. Besides providing care, the Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Center is also supposed to engage in education and research activities.
Alongside the center, there is the Bagchi Sri Shankara Cancer Centre and Research Institute, established with a donation of ₹210 crore by the Bagchi couple. This hospital opened last year and focuses on advanced cancer treatment.
Inaugurating the center, Subroto Bagchi said that cancer does not only attack the patient but also the family, and with medical treatment, compassion and care are equally necessary. He further stated that home care services are being rendered to patients by nurses and other healthcare workers from the center. Bagchi called for collective participation and added that cancer care cannot be solely dependent on the government.
It will be a place of hope and trust for the terminal cancer patient and his family.
