Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Black Box Data Under Analysis

Ahmedabad Plane Crash

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: Following the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash involving Air India Flight AI-171, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched a detailed probe in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 and India’s Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017.

The AAIB constituted a multidisciplinary investigation team on June 13, 2025. Headed by the Director General (DG) of AAIB, the team includes an aviation medicine specialist, an air traffic control officer, and representatives from the U.S.-based National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)—as required under international aviation protocols.

Black Boxes Recovered and Secured

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) were recovered from the crash site—one on June 13 from a rooftop and the other on June 16 from debris. Both devices were secured under continuous police protection and CCTV surveillance in Ahmedabad, following standard operating procedures.

On June 24, the black boxes were transported to Delhi by Indian Air Force aircraft with full security. The front black box, accompanied by the DG AAIB, reached the AAIB Lab at 1400 hrs. The rear box followed later the same day, arriving at 1715 hrs with another AAIB team.

Data Extraction Underway

Data retrieval began on the evening of June 24, led by the DG AAIB with technical support from AAIB and NTSB experts. The Crash Protection Module from the front black box was safely extracted, and its memory module accessed and downloaded on June 25 at the AAIB Lab.

Analysis of the CVR and FDR data is currently underway to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine contributing factors. The findings will be used to enhance aviation safety and prevent future incidents.

All procedures are being carried out in strict compliance with national laws and international commitments, ensuring a transparent and timely investigation.
