Budget Debate: In a fiery speech in the Rajya Sabha today, Biju Janata Dal MP Dr. Sasmit Patra strongly criticized the Union Budget 2025, accusing the central government of neglecting Odisha and failing to fulfill its long-standing demand for Special Category Status.
Dr. Patra called the Budget an “affront to the four and a half crore people of Odisha,” emphasizing that the state has been repeatedly ignored despite its significant contribution to India’s economy. He reminded the House that the BJP had promised Special Category Status for Odisha in its 2014 election manifesto, yet even after 11 years, the promise remains unfulfilled.
“Odisha is the economic backbone of this nation—our coal, our iron ore, our minerals fuel India’s progress. Yet, when Odisha asks for its fair share, this government turns its back!” Dr. Patra said.
He also pointed out Odisha’s vulnerability to cyclones and natural disasters, criticizing the central government for failing to recognize the state’s recurring challenges and its need for stronger financial support.
Taking a sharp dig at the Budget, he stated, “This Budget showers favors on some, ignores others, and treats Odisha like an afterthought. Is Odisha only good enough to extract mines, minerals, and coal from, but not worthy of Special Category Status?”
Dr. Patra urged the central government to take immediate action and grant Odisha the long-overdue Special Category State Status to ensure the state gets the resources needed for development and disaster resilience.
He concluded his speech with a passionate call: “The Government must not turn its back on Odisha. This is the moment for decisive action. Please provide Special Category State Status to Odisha!”
