Combining culture and commerce, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ministry of Culture has mooted weekly musical events at some of its top rated heritage sites soon in a bid to lure more visitors.
In the first phase, the Ministry has given nod to launch the shows at 12 such sites across India.
The list includes Leh Palace in Ladakh and Raigad Fort in Maharashtra – both built around 16th century(Mumbai) and Chennai’s 133-years-old Shore Temple.
The development follows the recommendations of some of the Members of Parliament to the Government to introduce such events in order to highlight the heritage sites, ASI sources stated.
Initially, the weekly musical events – designed after the popular light and sound shows at heritage sites –are being planned for the ticketed monuments, the sources added.
At present, 3691 monuments of the country come under the ASI of which 143 are ticketed sites, it was learnt.
The thrust of the new initiative has been on addition of new attractions for the visitors. While a visit to any heritage site assumes enough importance for heritage-enthusiasts, researchers, photographers and scholars who pursue special interest in history or archaeology, the common man often does not feel enough excitement. Hence, addition of musical events and food kiosks would lure them to visit the sites with family and friends, the officials observed.
Apart from highlighting heritage and providing patronage to the performing artistes, the new initiative would generate revenue that is important for maintenance of the sites, they pointed out.
The light and sound shows conducted at ASI’s 12 sites across India have already reaped encouraging results, the optimistic hosts stated.
