Robotic Cancer Surgery

Robotic Cancer Surgery: HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack today announced the launch of SSI Mantra Robotic Surgical System, an Indian-made, indigenously developed robotic-assisted surgical platform designed to assist surgeons in performing complex, minimally invasive cancer surgeries with improved precision, efficiency and visibility. The launch marks a significant step towards providing cutting-edge, technology-driven cancer treatment in Odisha.

Dr. Rupali Basu, Regional Business Head, HCG Cancer Hospitals, East & AP, said, “The launch of SSI Mantra at HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack is a significant step in our efforts to make cutting-edge cancer treatment accessible to patients in Odisha. While robotic surgery brings another level of efficiency and control to complex procedures, it also provides our surgical teams with the technology to provide minimally invasive treatment to appropriately selected patients.

Most importantly, it is about making cutting-edge surgical treatment available at the patient’s doorstep, so that they do not have to travel out of the state to avail the benefits of technology. We are delighted to bring this capability to Cuttack and look forward to growing this program and making it a success.”

With this award, HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack has become the first comprehensive cancer hospital in Odisha to offer robotic surgery for oncology, bringing the next generation of robotic-assisted cancer surgery to the people of the state. The initiative combines cutting-edge surgical technology with the expertise of the hospital’s dedicated surgical oncology team, reinforcing HCG’s commitment to bringing advanced, less invasive and patient-centric cancer care closer to the patients of the state.

Dr. Smita Padhi, CEO, HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack, said, “This is a proud moment for HCG Cuttack and Odisha. Bringing robotic surgery to our patients is part of our vision for this hospital and it is truly special to see it become a reality. It means that world-class, minimally invasive cancer treatment is now available here, close to home, so that our patients and their families do not have to travel to other cities for modern surgical treatment in critical times.

This also reflects the trust our patients have in us and the dedication of our entire clinical team, and it has strengthened our resolve to continue to enhance the quality of cancer treatment we provide in this region.” Dr. Manjunath N.M.L., Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, HCG Cancer Hospital, said, “Robotic surgery is a useful capability in the toolkit of surgical oncology, especially when dealing with complex procedures, when efficiency and reach are critical.

The SSI Mantra platform gives surgeons improved visibility, efficiency and control while performing minimally invasive procedures, which can be particularly valuable in carefully selected cancer cases. Our focus at HCG will be on using this technology in cases where it can truly add value to the surgical procedure and patient outcomes, supported by clinical judgment and the expertise of the surgical team.”

In its initial phase, the SSI Mantra platform will support robotic-assisted cancer surgery in key specialties including uro-oncology, colorectal and gastrointestinal oncology, and gynecological oncology, along with other appropriate diagnostic modalities. The technology is designed to enhance surgeon efficiency by improving precision, visibility, and instrument control during minimally invasive surgery. The hospital emphasizes that the decision to move forward with robotic surgery will be taken on a case-by-case basis, guided by each patient’s individual cancer type, stage, and overall medical condition.

Similarly, Dr. Vikas Nayak, Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack, said, “The launch of the SSI Mantra Robotic Surgical System is a significant moment for cancer treatment in Odisha. This technology improves a surgeon’s skill, visibility and control during complex procedures, which can make a meaningful difference for appropriately selected patients, ranging from reduced surgical trauma to potentially faster recovery. Our aim has always been to bring the most advanced, evidence-based cancer treatment options to the people of the region and this achievement reflects that continued commitment.”

Dr. Prasad Keshari Panda, Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack, said, “Robotic surgery can provide improved efficiency and control in the treatment of complex cancers, along with allowing us to operate through a minimally invasive approach. Having this technology at HCG Cuttack will help us provide another surgical option closer to home to appropriately selected patients.”

Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Swain, Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack, said, “The launch of SSI Mantra has added a significant capability to our surgical oncology program. For patients eligible for robotic-assisted surgery, it can help us perform complex procedures with improved efficiency and keep the procedure minimally invasive. Choosing the right treatment for each patient has always been our priority.”

Robotic-assisted surgery combines a surgeon’s expertise with modern technology to enable improved maneuverability, 3D visualization, and instrument control during complex procedures. For appropriately selected cancer patients, this minimally invasive approach potentially results in less surgical trauma, less blood loss, less post-operative pain, faster recovery, and a shorter hospital stay, helping patients return to their daily lives sooner.

The Robotic Surgery Program at HCG Cancer Center, Cuttack will be led by a team of skilled surgical oncologists, each bringing a dedicated experience of over a decade in the field of cancer surgery. The team includes Dr. Vikas Nayak, Consultant, Surgical Oncology (over 10 years of experience), Dr. Prasad Panda, Consultant, Surgical Oncology (over 10 years of experience), and Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Swain, Consultant, Surgical Oncology (over 10 years of experience).

With the launch of SSI Mantra, HCG Cancer Centre, Cuttack, Odisha has re-emphasized its focus on bringing internationally recognized, technology-driven cancer treatment to patients, reducing the need for patients and their families to travel outside the state for modern surgical oncology treatment.
