Tiger Census Begins Across India, Counting Underway in Odisha’s Similipal Reserve

Tiger Census Begins

Tiger Census Begins: The all-India tiger census has begun from today. Similarly, the tiger counting process has also started in Odisha’s Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary. The national-level report of this census will be published in 2026.

For the tiger census in Similipal, the Forest Department has deployed 85 personnel in 8 teams. They will count tigers based on pugmarks, scratch marks, and samples of scat and urine. Additionally, more than 300 trap cameras and AI cameras installed in Similipal will also be used for the process. This census will be conducted in various phases throughout the year. After completion, the report will be submitted to NTCA (National Tiger Conservation Authority).

At the national level, the tiger census report is published every four years. As per the last report, Similipal had 24 adult tigers and 8 cubs. Whether this number has increased or not will be known only after the new report is released.
