In a major boost to the health care initiatives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for Tamil Nadu’s first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and said the Centre was committed to providing quality and affordable healthcare to the people of the country.

Mr Modi also inaugurated the super-speciality blocks of Rajaji Medical College, Madurai, Thanjavur Medical College and Tirunelveli Medical College as a part of upgradation projects of these colleges.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar were also present on the occasion.

Mr Modi unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of foundation stone for AIIMS.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Mr Modi had approved setting up of AIIMS at Thoppur in Madurai on December 17 last year and it was announced in the 2015-16 Union Budget.

With an approved budget of Rs 1,264 crores, the construction, operation and maintenance cost of new AIIMS was being fully

borne by the Union Government.

It will be completed in 45 months by September 2022.

Congratulating the winners of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2019 for their achievements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged the extra-ordinarily gifted children to stay connected with nature.

Interacting with the winners, Mr Modi said that these awards offer an opportunity for recognition of talented children, and serve as an inspiration for others like them.

During their interaction with the Prime Minister, the children explained in detail their special achievements, and shared their inspirational stories.

Mr Modi shared some light and informal moments with the children who also requested him for autographs.

The awards have been given in two categories: Bal Shakti Puraskar to individuals; and Bal Kalyan Puraskar to institutions/individuals working for children.

A total of 783 applications were received for the Bal Shakti Puraskar this year.

The Ministry for Women and Child Development selected 26 awardees for the award, under the category of innovation, scholastic, sports, arts and culture, social service and bravery.

The National Selection Committee also finalised the names of two individuals and three institutions for Bal Kalyan Puraskar.(UNI)

Indigo Airlines will operate five flight services from Kannur International Airport under Union government’s Regional connectivity Scheme Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN).

Indigo airlines will operate from Friday onwards five flight services under UDAN from Kannur to Hyderabad, Chennai, Hubli, Bangalore and Goa. The passengers can travel at concessional rates.

A 74-seater AT 7 aircraft will fly to all the five destinations – starting at 0915 hrs to Hyderabad and the return flight will reach Kannur at 1325 hrs. Flight to Chennai starts at 1345 and return by 1600 hrs, the Hubli-bound flight will depart at 1750 hrs and return Kannur at 1925 hrs, the Bangaluru flight to start at 2000 hrs and will be back at 2125 hrs. The Goa service will start at 2205 hrs and return at 2355 hrs to Kannur.

The Central government has given a special consideration to Kannur International Airport by slashing one of the condition that no additional services to UDAN routes will be introduced for next three years.

The existing daily services by Go Air to Bangalore will not be included under UDAN.The Spice Jet Air carriers had also expressed its willingness to operate their services from Kannur Interantional Airport.

under UDAN Regional Connectivity Scheme.

Meanwhile, the Go Air International services to Muscat will begin on February 28 and the Indigo International service to Kuwait and Doha will start operating from March 15, Sources said on Thursday.(UNI)

(UNI) South African all-rounder Johan Botha, who last played for the Proteas in the World T20 in 2012, has announced his retirement from all forms of the game with immediate effect.

The 36-year-old Botha made the announcement following Hobart Hurricanes’ loss to the Sydney Sixers in the The Big Bash League (BBL) at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Wednesday night.

The off-spinner had been representing Hobart Hurricanes in the league for a long time, but has had to cut his stint short, citing “wear and tear on his body and sheer physical fatigue”, according to a Hurricanes statement.

(UNI) BJP lawmaker from Asansol in West Bengal and Union Minister Babul Supriyo on Wednesday joined issue with Congress leader from Punjab Navjot Singh Siddhu on appointment of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the Congress general secretary for East UP and said the development only reflect dynastic politics.

“What are her credentials?? Or what has she done to be called a role model?,” Mr Supriyo tweeted in response to a missive in the micro blogging site from cricketer-turned-politician Mr Sidhu.

“She is a terrific role model world-over and her charisma and magnetism will be the spark that ignites the Congress. Rahul Bhai’s strength multiplies manifold… ,” wrote Mr Sidhu, also a former BJP leader.

Delaying or cancelling Brexit would be a “calamitous” breach of trust with the electorate and worse than leaving the EU with no deal, Brexiteer Minister Liam Fox has said.

He told BBC’s Radio 4’s Today programme, the MPs pushing for a delay actually wanted to stop Brexit.

But he said this was the “worst outcome” of the current wrangles.

MPs are proposing alternative plans to the PM’s deal with the EU, including seeking an extension to the UK’s exit date – it is due to leave on 29 March.

But the prime minister has said the “right way” to rule out no-deal Brexit is to approve her withdrawal agreement.

Liam Fox said MPs should think about the “political consequences” of delaying Brexit not just the “short-term economic consequences”.

“There is no doubt that leaving with a deal and minimising disruption both to the UK and our EU trading partners is in our best interest,” the international development secretary said.

“But I think the most calamitous outcome would be for Parliament, having promised to respect the result of the referendum, to turn around and say it wouldn’t.”

Under current law, the UK will exit the EU on 29 March, whether or not a deal has been struck. The decision to leave was taken by 52pc to 48pc in a referendum in June 2016.

Former Chancellor George Osborne has said delaying the UK’s exit from the EU was now the “most likely” option.

Speaking to BBC business editor Simon Jack in Davos, Mr Osborne said that the prospect of no-deal meant “the gun is held to the British economy’s head”.

“Russian roulette is a game which you should never play because there’s a one-in-six chance that the bullet goes into your head,” he said.

Mr Osborne, who was sacked by Mrs May when she became prime minister after the referendum, said his successor Philip Hammond had “sensibly” told businesses that leaving without a deal was not a possibility.

“But we now need to hear it from the British prime minister,” he said.(UNI)

Several youth Congress workers even went to the extent of saying ‘ Priyanka’s political entry is the return of Indira in Congress.”
Some others danced with the posters of Priyanka as Goddess Durga inside the state party office in Lucknow after the announcement was made.
Meanwhile, UP Congress leaders also celebrated the occasion by distributing sweets and bursting crackers at the party state headquarters.
