Jammu and Kashmir Press Association (JKPA) on Saturday demanded all benefits be given to it on the lines of North-Eastern states as it has suffered immensely due to insecurity scenario prevailing for the past several decades.
In a statement here Saturday afternoon, JKPA president Ghulam Hassan Kalo said the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion Government of India has approved extension of all benefits to J&K as given to Northeast States under North East Industrial Development Scheme.
This, he said, is a healthy development and likely to boost industrial development in this trouble-torn State which has suffered immensely due to insecurity scenario prevailing over here for the last several decades.
He said since media houses are at par with the Industrial establishments and providing employment to thousands of both skilled and unskilled youth besides helping the Central and State governments in the dissemination of information regarding their activities, so they need similar benefits. (UNI)

Senior parliamentarian and a vocal anti-Modi leader Sharad Yadav on Saturday committed faux pas during his speech at the united opposition rally here and mixed up the infamous Bofors scam of 1980s with the Rafale row of contemporary setting.
Speaking at the rally organised by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and attended among others by former Congress stalwarts like Sharad Pawar and the present Congress leader Abhishekmanu Singhvi, the former JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav referred to the Bofors scam twice in his speech.
However, at the end of the speech, Mr Yadav corrected himself and apologised and said he wanted to say “Rafale…Rafale..Rafale” and not Bofors.
The chief hostess and organiser of the mega event – Ms Banerjee later remarked that such slips do happen while making speeches and what Sharad Yadav had meant was Rafale aircraft row and not Rafale.
Mr Yadav was referring to the new article on Rafale row as reported in a leading English daily. (UNI)

(UNI) Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested three people including an Afghan national, for allegedly planning to execute some people in southern part of the country. The three were identified as Wali Mohammad, a resident of Afghanistan, Sheikh Riyajuddin of Madangir, Delhi and Muhthasim CM belonging to Kerala’s Kasaragod. The two including Afghan and Riyajuddin were said to have been tasked by Muhthasim to allegedly kill some members of a socio religious organisation in South India and the three were hatching a plan to execute the same. They were arrested by a team of Delhi Police Special Cell New Delhi range. Further probe was underway.

Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived the ‘United India’ rally venue much before schedule as the beats of dhamsa-madol are reverberating in the air at Brigade Parade Ground ahead of the mega rally.
“ Brigade Parade Ground is filling up fast. It is certain that lakhs who have set out for the venue will not be able to enter. The crowd will surpass all earlier records, ” said party leader Arup Roy and added that the party is making all efforts to make the event a grand success.
A thick security blanket has been thrown on the sprawling Brigade Parade Ground – the venue for the mega rally – to prevent any untoward incident.
All the roads leading to the Brigade Parade ground are clogged with processions and vehicles carrying people to the rally.
As many as 10,000 police personnel have been deployed and around 400 police pickets set up to ensure foolproof security.

Policemen in plain clothes, personnel of the Rapid Action Force and Quick Response Team have been deployed at the rally venue.
More than 20 national leaders, including former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, former Union ministers Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and Arun Shourie, three present chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Chandrababu Naidu and H D Kumaraswamy; and former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Akhilesh Yadav and Gegong Apang will attend the meeting, TMC sources said.
Most of them have already arrived in the city.
Barring the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha, the TRS of Telengana and the CPI(M)-led Left Front, all anti-NDA parties are taking part in the rally, which, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), said will sound the “death knell” for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the coming Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, continuing his attack on the Mamata government, BJP MP Babul Supriyo said, “The TMC has a large fund base for the rally but not for the state? Kolkata will witness a show of hypocrisy today.”

“ By putting the traffic standstill & harassing the general public, TMC wants to stand up for the state’s welfare? How ironical! I urge all to share their today’s traffic woes, ” he tweeted.(UNI)

(UNI) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the new leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), formerly led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, and over two dozen other prominent German politicians, industry representatives and artists have urged London in their joint letter published by The Times newspaper to remain in the European Union.
According to the newspaper, Kramp-Karrenbauer has become the most senior German political figure so far to publicly appeal to the United Kingdom to reverse the Brexit process, while the letter in general marked a major shift in Berlin’s tone.
“Britons should … know that we believe that no choice is irreversible. Our door will always remain open: Europe is home … More than anything else, we would miss the British people — our friends across the Channel. We would miss Britain as part of the European Union, especially in these troubled times. Therefore Britons should know: from the bottom of our hearts, we want them to stay,” the letter said, as quoted in the outlet’s Letters to the Editor section.

(UNI) Amid heightened debate on the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya and Prime Minister Narendra Modi maintaining that the government would await Supreme Court verdict on it, the RSS on Friday set 2025 as the deadline for the construction of a grand temple.

“Chha varsh ke paschaat 2025 mein phir se Kumbh Sampan hoga, tab tak Bharat ke Pratik Ram Mandir ki bhi nirman prakriya purn hokor rashtra samridhi ki deesha me agey barega (After six years, in 2025 there will be Kumbh yet again. National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) will organize an online seminar on early identification, intervention, management and rehabilitation options for children suffering from ‘Global Developmental Delay’, on January 19.
‘Global Developmental Delay’ refers to delay on the part of a child to reach certain milestones compared to other children of the same age. This might involve learning to walk or talk, movement skills, learning new things and interacting with others socially and emotionally.

The Interactive Disability Awareness Seminar (NIDAS) on “Global Developmental Delay: What more to be done?” is being organised in collaboration with the Directorate of Social Justice, Government of Kerala.

The two-and-a-half hour webinar, led by Ms Aswathi A.K, Speech Language Pathologist, Department of NeuroDevelopmental Science, NISH, aims at creating awareness on the causes, importance of early identification and intervention and the management and rehabilitation options for the children suffering from “Global Developmental Delay.”

The proceedings of the webinar, to be conducted in Malayalam, will be streamed live for the registered participants from the NISH campus at Akkulam here from 1030 hrs on Saturday.

Former Prime minister and the Janata Dal(S) national president H D Deve Gowda will participate in the mega rally being hosted by the West Bengal Chief minister, the Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Saturday.

According to JD(S) sources, said that while Mr Gowda has already reached Kolkota to attend the rally, his son and Karnataka Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy will join the rally, being organised on part of building a platform to fight against the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The West Bengal Chief minister, had attended the swearing-in ceremony of H D Kumaraswamy, who had took oath as the Chief minister, in May last year, and formed the JD(S)-Coalition government.

Congress group leader in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjuna Kharge, also from Karnataka, is too expected to attend the rally, representing the Congress in the mega rally.

(UNI) The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is to set up six incubation centers across the country to attract young talents having interests in Space science.
Addressing media here, the ISRO chairman Dr K Sivan said “We have also developed incubation center at Tripura for the young scientists who can contribute in the space programme.The navigation, payload and communication are the fields where they can contribute”.
He also said any model or technology developed by these students will be bought by ISRO.
He also said ISRO has tied up with National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jaipur, Kurukshetra, Varanashi, Patna, Kanyakumari and Jammu and the young scientists will be encouraged to develop not only satellites but the other up gradation in the technology as well.
“We have initiated programme to reach out the masses and especially the students of the country and a collective efforts are needed to inculcate, nurture and enhance the scientific temper of the country”,

Chennai, Jan 17 (UNI) Council for Leather Exports (CLE) Chairman P R Aqeel Ahmed on Thursday said US footwear companies were looking at India for sourcing fearing imposition of sanctions on China. The Indian footwear exporters have been receiving more enquiries, including requests for samples, from the US as they were worried about sanctions on China, he told reporters here. He said at present India exports about two to three per cent of leather products for US.

The CLE Chairman said several Chinese leather firms have evinced keen interest to set up facilities in India.
Mr Ahmed also said Russia, Africa, Chile, Japan, Korea and Latin America were also potential markets for the Indian leather industry.

New Delhi, Jan 17 (UNI) Attacking the Narendra Modi government for targetting public intellectuals and activists, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Thursday demanded withdrawal of cases filed against senior professor and author Anand Teltumbde in the Bhima Koregaon case.
“The vicious targetting by the Modi government and BJP state governments of intellectuals and activists, who support the cause of Dalit and oppressed communities, is intensifying”, the Left party’s polit bureau said in a statement.
It said that Mr Teltumbde has been falsely charged in this case when he was not even present
at the event.
Teltumbde is a senior Professor and author of many critically acclaimed books.
“Such attacks on those critical of its policies and activities and dissenting voices has happened earlier under the calumnious category of ‘Urban Naxals’, CPI(M) said.
It also pointed out that “respected octogenarian intellectual of Assam, Hiren Gogoi along with others have been booked on charges of sedition for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill”.
The CPI(M) said it condemning such harassment of public intellectuals and activists.

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn on Friday announced the release of the first look poster of his upcoming comedy flick ‘Total Dhamaal’ and said the trailer will release on January 21.

‘Total Dhamaal’ is an upcoming adventure comedy film directed and co-produced by Indra Kumar.

It is the sequel to the 2011 film ‘Double Dhamaal’ and the third installment of the ‘Dhamaal’ film series.

The film stars Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaffrey, Madhuri Dixit, Esha Gupta and Anil Kapoor.

The film is scheduled to release on February 22.

The death toll from the explosion at a police school in Colombia’s Bogota reached 21, while 68 others sustained injuries, local media reported on Friday The attack took place at General Santander Police Academy in Bogota on Thursday, ahead of a graduation ceremony at the school. “Unfortunately, the provisional list includes 21 deceased, including the perpetrator,” the police said in a statement.
