The decision by the All India Institute of Medical Science located in Bhubaneswar to introduce Hindi as a medium of communication being ‘ imposed’, the resultant situation is bound to create a wave of panic among the patients who come to AIIMs.
An institution here which still requires a journey of miles to acquire the fame and competence that of one in Delhi, by deciding to impose Hindi has set in a motion more complex which may force people go through a process of communication gap in a field as delicate as health care.
Already having on board a good number of staff, including doctors, of Hindi speaking origin, the AIIMS at Bhubaneswar further leads the patients and attendants through so many cross and re-cross the divide between communication and compassion.
Improve expertise, language secondary
May be, in the name of national language, the guardians manning it here, have tried to complicate the situation by such a monopolised imposition that has invited opposition from various spectrums in Odisha, and rightly so.
Moving little away from the linguistic passion shown by the authorities at AIIMS, they must, instead, make efforts at reducing the physical pain and frustration among patients who queue up at its premises the night before to get their turn. Sometimes even a day and night long wait doesn’t come fruitful to meet the doctors.
And, sometimes, a good number of patients from here are being referred to SCB Medical College & Hospital, which abundantly expose the myth about its name and the bottom reality.
