On the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the Congress has already made its position clear and initiating his take on the Bill Rahul Gandhi reiterated the party’s stance dubbing the intent as ‘criminal’ in nature against the people of India.
Slamming the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, (CAB) 2019, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said the move is an attempt to “ethnically cleanse the Northeast”, and “a criminal attack” on the people.
“The CAB is an attempt by Modi-Shah government to ethnically cleanse the North East. It is a criminal attack on the North East, their way of life and the idea of India. I stand in solidarity with the people of the North East and am at their service,” Gandhi tweeted.
The bill, which had been passed in Lok Sabha on Monday, and is being debated in the Rajya Sabha currently ,
proposed to give citizenship for non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
On Tuesday the former Congress president described the CAB as an attack on the Constitution and said that anyone who supports the Bill is attempting to destroy the foundation of India.
“The CAB is an attack on the Indian constitution. Anyone who supports it is attacking and attempting to destroy the foundation of our nation”, he had tweeted.
Most of opposition parties, led by the Congress vehemently opposed the bill, alleging that it is discriminatory and contrary to the basis tenets of Constitution.
Taking to twitter, Congress party criticised the government, “when the basis of citizenship becomes religion, it violates the Constitution of India and outrightly tells the world that India is no longer a secular and unified country.”
