Urging all members in the Rajya Sabha to support the Triple Talaq Bill for smooth passage, Union Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday said the Bill is about gender justice, gender dignity and gender equality and one should not look at it through prism of politics and vote bank.
Soon after Zero Hour, Prasad moved the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 for consideration and passing, saying: “We have brought this bill because law is deterence.”
“On one side our daughters are winning gold, flying fighter jets and involved in Chandrayan mission while on the other few of our daughters are on foothpaths,” the Minister added. “It is a matter of a woman’s dignity. Today this matter is about gender justice, gender dignity and gender equality,” he added.
The bill was passed in Lok Sabha on July 25 with a majority of 302 vs 82. In the Rajya Sabha, however, the government does not have the numerical advantage as it enjoys in the Lok Sabha. The BJP is thus pinning its hopes on the walkout by parties such as JD(U), which, despite being its allies are opposing the bill.
The BJD, which has seven MPs in the House has already indicated that it will support the Bill. (UNI)
