A Gwalior gharana exponent of classical music Sunanda Patnaik will keep crystallizing in the memory lanes of music that she had wedded to from her early years.
Although music came to her from a legacy but, she grew under a spell of evolution from the pre-independence era and was fortunate that she belonged to a generation which had and continued growing in an excitement of classical music.
Born in Cuttack in Odisha, Sunanda began her singing from an early age of 14 in All India Radio but her voice quickly bandied out of the regional contours to create the resonance, holding an audience at the national level, spell-bound by her recitals.
It was no mere melody of Sunanda’s voice but, she took exponents like herself to myriad music lovers who remained mesmerised by her music which was soulful and attractive.
Known to have a range and voice that connoted the full-throat ed ease and vibrato, Sunanda’s exponential climb always kept the awards and recognitions drawfed.
Amid the blaze of her fame and revered place in music, Sunanda, who was in Kolkata till her last breath, had one bit regret that , she could not see the time smiling on her in her native state, Odisha.
But, in her death also she left the Odias a proud lot.
