Six-time World Boxing Champion and London Olympics bronze medalist, boxer MC Mary Kom on Thursday assured the country that she would definitely give the countrymen a reason to ‘smile’ at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
While launching the Colgate-Palmolive India’s Keep India Smiling (KIS) Mission New Delhi, the legendary woman boxer said, “Boxing is my life and passion which I will continue till my last breath”.
She added: “Even after the age of 30, I am still fighting in the ring, while the circumstances are the adverse in this age. But my struggles continue and I will continue to glorify the country.”
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee had won her sixth world title last year.
Terming ‘smile’ an integral part of life, Mary said, “As you all know my journey has been very challenging which I have taken head-on. Being a human, at times things become tough for me as well. But in situations like these, a smile gives me strength.”
A mother of three, Mary Kom recently won gold medal in her new 51 kg category in the second edition of the India Open boxing tournament in Guwahati.
Meanwhile, The International Boxing Association (AIBA) gave her the number one ranking in 45 to 48 kg weight category.
Mary Kom is undergoing training in the National Capital’s IG stadium. She said that when she got tired of training, she tried to be happy to motivate herself.
There is no dearth of talent in the country and there are immense possibilities in sports. They just need a platform to showcase it.
This mission, she said, will help the people who qualify get mentorship according to their needs. (UNI)
