Air India to go to history: Centre committed to privatise the airlines, Puri

Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday said the Government is committed for complete privatisation of the Air India.

‘The government’s determination to privatise Air India is a given. We have to get the best possible deal and get it in the shortest time available. People are very much interested in acquiring Air India. There are players who are interested in Air India,’ he said during a media interaction at a workshop of Civil Aviation Correspondents here.

‘Whoever acquires Air India will be very fortunate and will be able to run it according to strong private sector principles,’  Puri said.

Earlier on July 11, the Minister had told Lok Sabha that the Government is committed to the strategic disinvestment of national carrier Air India. The Minister said the government has decided to privatise Air India and that the move will benefit the citizens. ‘ We will privitaise AIr India and will ensure that the company remains in Indian hands,’ he said.

In a written reply to a question, the Minister said, ‘ Even as the Government is committed to the disinvestment of Air India, the Government has approved a Revival plan of Air India with financial support which focusses on building a competitive and profitable airline Group.’
