Centre sanctions 50 electric buses for Tripura

To push the mission of clean mobility in public transportation, the central government has sanctioned 50 electric buses for Tripura along with 26 other states for intra-city and intercity operation under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Scheme (FAME) phase II.

Tripura is the second state after Assam in Northeast, which has been included in the scheme. In Tripura all 50 electric buses will run in the capital city while 100 such buses would run in Assam where 50 buses will cater Guwahati and 25 each in Silchar and Jorhat.

According to officials, Department of Heavy Industry had invited interest from million plus cities, smart cities, state/UT capitals and cities from special category states for FAME scheme and later sanctioned altogether 5595 buses to 64 cities based on the potential proposals for deployment of electric buses on operational cost basis.

The department had received 86 proposals from different state governments for the deployment of 14988 e-buses but after evaluation proposals, Project Implementation and Sanctioning Committee (PISC) has sanctioned 5095 electric buses.

Each selected city and State Transport Undertakings was asked to initiate the procurement process in a time bound manner for deployment of sanctioned electric buses on operational cost basis. These buses will run about 4 billion Kilometer during their contract period and are expected to save cumulatively about 1.2 billion liters of fuel over the contract period, which will result into avoidance of 2.6 million tones of green house gas emission, officials added.
