First NRC casualty! Uncertain over family’s inclusion in NRC, woman kills self in Assam

A woman allegedly committed suicide in Tezpur in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district this morning following rumours of non-inclusion of her family’s names in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the state, which was published today. The woman, Sayera Begum, of Dolabari in Tezpur, reportedly killed herself by jumping into a well. Her husband, Samser Ali, said Sayera was agitated since yesterday over the final NRC as Ali’s and their two sons names had not appeared in the complete draft NRC, published on July 30, 2018. Sayera’s name was, however, included in the complete draft NRC. “She feared that our names will once again be excluded and unable to take the tension anymore, she killed herself,” Ali claimed. Ali added that his and their two sons names have been included in the final NRC, but his wife committed suicide before they could check their names. Police have retrieved the body and launched investigation to ascertain the facts. The final NRC with 3.11 crore names included and 19 lakh exclusions was published today.
