Odisha government has decided to install prepaid smart digital metres and tamper proof smart meters in the house of the consumers to check power theft.
State Energy Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra said the government is planning to install 4,500 smart digital pre-paid meters in Sambalpur as a pilot project. He said if fund successful it would be extended to other districts of the state.
The pre-paid meters will have a digital card. The consumers will have to recharge it by making advance payment. They would have to charge their meters like they charge their mobile phone and Televisions to use electricity.Similarly,the Minister said the government is also planning to install tamper proof smart metres in steel city Rourkela on a pilot basis.
The smart meters Mr.Das said cannot be tampered or slowed down. If anybody tried to tamper with the meter it would be known immediately and action would be taken against the consumer concern, he said.
The Minister clarified that the consumers would not have to pay for the installation of smart or pre-paid meters. (UNI)
