Short Film On Menstruation set in India has bagged an Oscar in Documentary Short Subject category at the 91st Academy Awards.

‘Period. End of Sentence’, An Short Film On Menstruation set in Hapur village outside Delhi, has bagged an Oscar in the documentary feature category at the Academy Awards.

Directed by Award-winning filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi,

‘Period. End of Sentence’ has been produced by Indian producer Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment.

The feature is set in the Hapur district outside of Delhi where women lead a quiet revolution against the taboo of menstruation.

For generations, women were not provided access to sanitary pads which led to health problems and girls dropping out of school. When a sanitary pad vending machine was installed in the area, women learnt how to manufacture pads for themselves, thereby empowering their community. They named their brand ‘FLY’.

The film came to into being as a part of The Pad Project, started by students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.

Reacting to the award for her film, producer Guneet Monga said,’

WE WON!!! To every girl on this earth… know that you are a goddess… if heavens are listening… look MA we put @sikhya on the map.”

Other documentary shorts nominated in the category were ‘Black Sheep’, ‘End Game’, ‘Lifeboat’ and ‘A Night at the Garden’.

Celebrities from several walks of life hailed the Oscar for the film.

These included Congress president Rahul Gandhi ,Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri , Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanathand Bollywood diva Priyanka Chopra.

Taking to Twitter, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said,’

It’s an important film that you have made.

Art has always found a way to address challenges in a unique way. The recognition that your film has received will inspire others towards action.’

Hailing the Oscar for the film, Urban development minister Hardeep Singh puri saud,’

A deeply empowering moment for every girl on this planet as Guneet Monga’s film ‘Period- End of sentence’ based on fight against deep rooted stigma of menstruation bags an Oscar. It is a victory of the new mindset that doesn’t treat processes of biology as a taboo.’

Against all odds Hapur’s pad women Sneha and her friends managed to break the stereotype about menstruation and inspired the world with their efforts. . Actress Priyanka Chopra too, had words of appreciation for the Oscar-winning movie.
