At least 11 people were killed and six hospitalized in a mass shooting in a Virginia Beach city building, Police Chief Jim Cervera said.
According to police, the mass shooting took place on Friday afternoon in Building 2 of the municipal center in Virginia when people were visiting the municipal center to conduct business, reported CNN.
Police Chief James Cervera said that the gunman, a current employee and was confronted shortly after opening fire on multiple floors.There was an exchange of gunfire with officers, the chief said.
The incident is the deadliest mass shooting in the US since November. Earlier, 12 people were killed at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California in November.
Pained by the incident, Mayor Bobby Dwyer said, ‘This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach. The people involved are our friends, coworkers, neighbors and colleagues’.
