Three bookies placing bets on Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches were arrested and cash worth Rs 8.1 lakh recovered from their possession, Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni said here on Friday.
Acting on an information, the local police and the Crime Branch jointly raided a house and arrested the three bookies in the Adampur area on Thursday, the SSP said.
The arrested bookies have been identified as Nitin Pandey alias Sunny Pandey, a resident of Wajyipur Koniya, Shivpur resident Guddu Kumar Sonkar and Yamuna Nagar resident Prakash Nigam.
Eight mobile phones being used in illegal betting business, one television set, one calculator and 11 registers have been recovered from their possession.
The cash amount had been raised from the people of various areas of Varanasi. (UNI)
