An elderly couple were buried alive early today after mudslides triggered by heavy rain enveloped their dwelling house at Pubung Phatak under Jorebunglow block in Darjeeling Hills, police said today.
The mishap happened at the wee hours around 02.00 – 02.30 hrs when the mudslides from upper hill buried their house killing Kumar Lopchan (60) and his wife Bal Kumar Lopchan (55) in sleep.
Darjeeling hills have been witnessing heavy rains for the past few days, causing landslides and metalled roads to caved in, disrupting vehicular traffic.
Local police station with the assistance of the fire brigade retrieved the couple’s body and sent the bodies to Darjeeling district hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
