New Delhi: US Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, who is part of President Donald Trump’s delegation to India, on Monday met Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash and Trai Chairman R.S. Sharma and discussed information technology and telecom matters common to both countries.
Pai retweeted photos of his meeting with the Trai Chairman, tweeted by the telecom regulator.
Although the subjects of the discussions are not disclosed, sources said it touched upon 5G services and technology, and Internet of Things (IoT) which could bring high tech to agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare and education.
The Indian side said the government policies are currently aimed at bridging the digital divide, said sources.
India is set to hold auction for 5G spectrum for the first time later this year.
Two years ago, Pai’s controversial decision to revoke net neutrality in the US triggered a massive backlash. India has taken the opposite position on this issue.
on Sunday, Pai had tweeted: “Almost fifty years after my parents came to the U.S. from India, I’m looking forward to traveling to India along with @POTUS and other U.S. government officials, and participating in bilateral meetings aimed at deepening the friendship between our two nations.”
