HC extends protection from arrest to former CPC Rajeev Kumar

Calcutta High Court today extended protection from arrest to former city police chief Rajeev Kumar till July 22 in connection with multi-crore Sarada chit fund scam.

Justice Asha Arora fixed the next hearing of the case on July 15.

As the case came up for hearing today before the bench, Kumar requested the court for extension of protection from arrest and also to be allowed to move out of Kolkata on the ground that he needed to discharge his duties as the state’s CID chief.

The court granted his request for prptection from arrest but refrained from issuing any order on his second appeal.

The case came before the Calcutta High Court scanner in the last week of May after CBI issued a notice to  Kumar directing him to appear at its Kolkata office.

Kumar had moved the Supreme Court but the Apex Court rejected his plea asking him to move the case before Calcutta High Court.

Mr Kumar, however, moved the District Sessions Court as the Calcutta High Court was closed for summer vacation. The District Court, however, declined to entertain him .

Kumar again moved the vacation bench of the High Court. Justice Pratip Kumar Banerjee admitted his appeal and granted protection from arrest for a month.
