India will host the 2020 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, the sport’s governing body confirmed it on Friday.
The decision to award the rights to India was taken at the FIFA Council meeting in Miami, US.
“We are delighted to announce that India has been confirmed as the host of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2020,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said after the meeting.
Now, India will take part in the prestigious tournament for the first time. Earlier, India had successfully hosted the U-17 Men’s FIFA World Cup between 6 and 28 October 2017, in which England emerged victorious.
The hosts played three matches and could not qualify for the second round as they were knocked out of the biennial tournament in the group stage. However, India managed to score their first-ever FIFA goal, which came against Colombia by Jeakson Thounaojam.(UNI)
