Expressing non-concurrence with the analysis behind India’s year-after-year decline on the World Press Freedom Index, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar averred on Monday that the Fourth Estate actually enjoys greater liberty within this country compared to other nations.
“I am prepared to discuss the issue separately. The Opposition and journalists have every right to write and speak against the government besides posing questions. Improvement in a democracy is possible only through fresh issues being raised by the Opposition and scribes besides criticism. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) respects the other side and the Centre has unalloyed regard for press entitlements,” the visiting politician said during a media conference at the BJP office in Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital.
Pointing out that a Ram temple exists in Ayodhya, the Minister said that an impressive shrine remains to be constructed but he declined comment on the matter as it is sub judice.
“Article 370 was abrogated on grounds of law and morality. I am confident that the Centre’s decision shall withstand any legal challenge,” he added.
