New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to former finance minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX media corruption case registered by the CBI. The former minister will, however, continue to remain in jail as he is currently in the ED (Enforcement Directorate) custody. A bench headed by Justice R Banumathi said, “The petitioner can be released on bail, provided he (Chidmabaram) is not arrested in any other case”.
Chidambaram (74) is is currently in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody for his alleged involvement in the INX media corruption case. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a late night drama on August 21 from his residence. He can be released on bail, provided he is not arrested in any other case, the Top Court said.
A personal bail bond of Rs 1 lakh has to be furnished by the accused, the court stated, adding that Chidambaram also has to ensure his presence before the investigating agency for interrogation, as required by them. This won’t affect the proceedings in the ED case in which P Chidambaram is currently in custody.Chidambaram cannot leave the country without permission of the trial court, the Top court said.
