Medical services hit due to boycott of duties by doctors

Medical services were affected in hospitals across Telangana on Wednesday as doctors including senior physicians from teaching hospitals boycotted their duties in response to a day-long strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) protesting against the passing of National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill by the Lok Sabha.

Various doctors associations including the state unit of the IMA extended their support to the strike and the protesting doctors staged demonstrations in front of various hospitals demanding the withdrawal the Bill.

Emergency services were unaffected, while the state government made alternative arrangements for the benefit of patients.

The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the NMC Bill for replacing the corruption-plagued MCI with a new body, in what was described by the government as one of the biggest reforms that will end inspector raj’ in the Medical Education sector.
