Nadal clinches 19th grandslam: defeats Russia’s Medvedev in US Open singles final

Second seed Rafael Nadal of Spain established his supremacy in the US Open by overcoming fifth seed Russian Daniil Medvedev in a five-setter thriller in in the singles final by 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 in four fours and 49 minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium here on Sunday night.
The Russian player was two sets down before staging a remarkable rally to level the score two sets all by clinching the third and fourth sets. Nadal was serving for the 10th game of the fifth and final set. Medvedev had a chance to break Nadal as the Spanish player trailed 30-40. However, Medevdev could not capitalised the opportunity and Nadal wrapped up the set and match by winning 6-4 as Medevdev lost the match with a forehand forced error. Nadal had gained the vital break in the eighth game of the fifth set as he established a 5-3 lead and his service to follow.
Nadal committed 46 unforced errors in comparison to 57 by his opponent. Nadal won total 176 points and Medvedev 164. The powerful Russian player fired 14 aces and committed four double faults. Nadal recorded five aces and also committed same number of double faults.
