The new Australian government headed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison was sworn in on Wednesday by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove, local media reported.
On May 18, Australians elected 151 members of the House of Representatives and voted for candidates for 40 seats in the Senate, the upper house of the parliament. The coalition of the National and Liberal parties led by Morrison won the elections with at least 77 seats, while only 76 are needed for a majority. The Labor Party got 68 seats.
According to the 9News broadcaster, almost all members of the new government retained their positions, but there are newcomers as well. The new government includes seven women, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Marise Payne.
Morrison said at the first meeting with cabinet members that his “hungry, committed and united” team will focus on the desires of ordinary Australians. The first meeting of the new parliament will be held in early July.
