Union Textile Minister, Smriti Zubin Irani on Monday said the permanent campus of the National Institute of Fashion Technology is likely to inaugurated by November this year. “The new Shillong campus will be the most picturesque NIFT in the country,”
Irani said after inspecting the under construction National Institute of Fashion Technology Centre, Mawdiangdiang. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma accompanied the Union Minister . It may be mentioned that the foundation stone for the fashion centre was laid by former textile minister Kavuru Sambasiva Rao in 2013. The progress of construction of the campus has reached 98.95 per cent.
The land for the NIFT campus which measures 20.13 acres was gifted free of cost by the government of Meghalaya. Initially, the cost of the project was estimated at Rs 74.65 crores but after he revised cost the total outlay for the project is Rs 105.22 crore. At present, the temporary campus of NIFT Shillong which started in 2008 is functioning from Pasteur Hills, Lawmali, Shillong.
Presently, there are 281 students – which include 221 girls and 59 boys. Sangma and Irani held a review meeting on Poshan Abhiyan at the Main Secretariat, Shillong. The meeting reviewed at length the implementation of the scheme in the state and the Union Minister suggested ways and measures to improve the health of mother and child and adolescents through the Poshan Abhiyan so that the benefits of the programme can be availed by pregnant women, lactating mothers, children and adolescents.
Irani, appreciated the Chief Minister for some of the positive steps that he and his government are undertaking district wise. “I am hopeful that under the dynamic leadership of the Chief Minister, on all fronts relating to Textiles, Women and Child Development Meghalaya will scale new heights,” Irani said.
