Petrol, diesel prices witness steep rise

Petrol and diesel prices in the country rose sharply for the third consecutive day to a more than one-and-a-half months high due to the rise in crude oil prices in the international market.

According to the Indian Oil Corporation website information, the price of petrol in the national capital rose by 29 paise to reach the highest level of Rs 72.71 per liter since Aug 1.

This is the biggest jump since July 6, when prices suddenly increased due to increase in taxes by two rupees. In Delhi, the price of diesel rose by 19 paise to Rs 66.01 per liter, the highest level since July 29.

In the last three days, petrol has become costlier by 68 paise and diesel by 58 paise in the national capital. Oil marketing companies fix their prices on the basis of the average of the last 15 days and hence, a sharp rise in prices may continue for a few days.

In Kolkata also petrol became expensive by 29 paise and diesel by 19 paise and sold by Rs 75.43 and Rs 68.42 per liter, respectively. Petrol in Mumbai rose by 29 paise to Rs 78.39 and diesel by 20 paise to Rs 69.24 per liter.

In Chennai, the price of petrol increased by 30 paise and diesel by 20 paise and they reached Rs 75.56 and Rs 69.77 per liter respectively. (UNI)
