Prez address

Terming President’s address to a joint sitting of Parliament as ‘uninspiring’ and full of platitudes, the Congress on Thursday said that the speech only repeats the statements by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing reporters here, senior Congress leaders Anand Sharma, Leader of the House in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chawdhury and chief whip of the Congress in the Lok Sabha K Suresh said the address failed to mention the unfulfilled promises made by the BJP during its previous term.

They said the President’s address also failed to make any reference to the problem of lack of investment and unemployment which was at a 45-year high.

‘The President’s address is uninspiring, dull and full of platitudes. It only repeates the statement by the prime Minister after winning the Lok Sabha elections. It also fails to mention the unfulfilled promises of the last five years,’ Mr Anand Sharma said.

Sharma said the address failed to make any reference to the problem of unemployment. ‘There was no reference to the lack of jobs and unemployment that is at a 45-year high. It should have given a roadmap on job creation.’

He said that there has been a downturn in the economy and the GDP has failed.

‘There is unanimity that the GDP growth will be 6.6 per cent which way below the 11 per cent required to achieve the purported goal of the PM to make India and 5 Trillion dollars economy by the year 2024,’ he said.

He also termed ‘unnecessary’ the inclusion of the issue of ‘One Nation one election’ in the address especially when there was a complete lack of consensus on the issue as was evident from several parties staying away from Wednesday’s meeting called by the PM to discuss the issue.
