Telangana continues to see surge in Covid cases

Hyderabad:  The surge in Covid-19 cases continues in Telangana as the state added 1,602 new cases during the last 24 hours, health officials said.

With the fresh cases, the southern state’s tally mounted to 2,47,284.

Four more people succumbed to the deadly virus, pushing the death toll to 1,366.

The fatality rate stands at 0.55 per cent against the national average of 1.5 per cent. According to the director of public health and family welfare, 44.96 per cent of the deaths were due to Covid, while 55.04 per cent of deceased had comorbidities.

For the second consecutive day, the state reported fewer recoveries than the new cases. A total of 982 people recovered during the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries so far to 2,26,646.

The state’s recovery rate, which had crossed 92 per cent last week, slumped to 91.65 per cent against the national average of 92.3 per cent.

The state now has 19,272 active cases, of which 16,522 are in home or institutional isolation.

The maximum number of new cases (295) were recorded in Greater Hyderabad. The cases also surged in districts.

Medchal Malkajgiri district recorded second highest number of infections at 137 followed by Rangareddy (118), Nalgonda (79), Khammam (79), Bhadradri Kothagudem (77), Karimnagar (76), Warangal Urban (49), Nagarkurnool (47), Peddapalli (46) and Suryapet (45).

According to a media bulletin by the health department, a total of 46,970 samples were tested during last 24 hours and out of them 44,008 were conducted in the government-run laboratories.

There are 18 government and 47 laboratories conducting RT-PCR/CBNAAT/TRUENAT tests. There are also 1,076 Rapid Antigen testing centres run by government.

The cumulative number of tests rose to 45,31,153. Samples tested per million population surged to 1,21,739.

Out of total 2,47,284 positive cases so far, 70 per cent (1,73,099) were asymptomatic and 30 per cent (74,185) symptomatic.

The data shows that 63.9 per cent of those tested positive so far were aged between 21-50 years. As many as 22.91 per cent were aged above 51 years. The positive cases include 13.18 per cent who were below 20 years.

The bed status in 61 government-run hospitals treating Covid patients shows that 7,362 out of 8,561 beds are vacant.

In 225 private hospitals, 7,063 out of 8,614 beds are vacant.
