India’s Media Landscape Grows: India’s press and media ecosystem continues to grow, with the number of registered publications rising significantly over the past decade. According to data shared in the Lok Sabha, the number of publications registered with the Press Registrar General of India has surged from 1.05 lakh in 2014-15 to 1.55 lakh in 2024-25.
Similarly, the number of private satellite TV channels has gone up from 821 in 2014-15 to 908 in 2024-25, reflecting the growing scale and diversity of the Indian media landscape.
At present, a total of 92 private channels and 50 Doordarshan (DD) channels are available on DD Free Dish, enabling wider access to information and entertainment across the country. Both private and public broadcasters offer content in various regional languages, ensuring better reach among local audiences.
The government is also continuing its efforts to strengthen public broadcasting infrastructure. As part of the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) Scheme for 2021–26, the expansion of Prasar Bharati’s network is ongoing. Under this scheme, three new transmitters have been approved for Himachal Pradesh—one 5kW transmitter in Mandi and two 1kW FM transmitters in Chamba and Dharampur.
