Odisha Assembly pleads for inclusion of “Ahimsa” in the Preamble

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha State Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to include ‘Ahimsa’ (non-violence) in the Preamble to the Indian Constitution.

The resolution was passed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s first visit to Odisha on March 23.

Mahatma Gandhi had visited Odisha on eight occasions.

The unanimous resolution was the result of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s clarion call for inclusion of the term ‘Ahimsa’ n the Preamble about three years ago.

“Of all the things that this country has given to the world, Gandhi’s philosophy and message stand out as one of its greatest contributions,” the Chiefr Minister stated.

The Leader of Opposition, Pradipta Kumar Naik said that Gandhi’s philosophy needed to be reflected in the government’s policies.
Congress leader Narasingha Mishra suggested that Gandhi’s life and teachings should be taught in schools.
