TikTok Ban: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has requested the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the implementation of a law that would ban the popular social media app TikTok or force its sale.
Trump’s argument is that he would have time after taking office to pursue a “political resolution” to this vexing issue.
The court is set to hear arguments in the case on January 10 next year. The law would require TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the platform to an American company or face a ban. The U.S. Congress voted in April to ban it unless ByteDance sells the app by Jan. 19.
Trump’s support for TikTok marks a reversal from 2020, when he tried to block the app in the United States and force its sale to American companies due to its Chinese ownership.
Meanwhile, Trump spoke with TikTok’s CEO after asking the Supreme Court to pause the ban on the social media app.
