New Low-Pressure Approaches: After two days of persistent heavy rainfall, Odisha witnessed a break in the downpour today. While rainfall activity has reduced across the state, dense fog has enveloped several regions. However, meteorologists caution that a new low-pressure system has already formed in the Bay of Bengal, with the previous system yet to fully dissipate.
This low-pressure system, centered over the west-central Bay of Bengal, is moving towards the southwest and is likely to approach the adjoining northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by the evening of December 24. The Regional Meteorological Center predicts moderate rainfall in seven districts—Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Rayagada—under the influence of this system.

Nine additional districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Koraput, and Malkangiri, may experience light to moderate rainfall during this period. On December 25, the department has forecast light rainfall for 11 districts, including Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Angul, and Kalahandi, with a yellow alert issued for dense fog in these areas. Visibility in these districts is expected to drop below 50 meters.
The weather office also predicts a dry spell from December 26 to 28, but rainfall could return by December 29, accompanied by cold wave-like conditions. Following this, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, intensifying winter conditions across the state.
